In 2002, Ryue Nishizawa received the commission to build a house in the special ward of Ōta, a traditional village with a fragmented and heterogeneous structure, once swallowed by the expansion of Tokyo. The built project, based on an atomization of the program into a set of independent boxes and interlocking gardens, is closely linked to this physical context, not only in formal terms, but also in regards to socio-economic issues that affect the city and its inhabitants at a long, medium and short term. In turn, the attention given to the balance between built and void calls for a reconsideration of the idea of limit and challenges conventional distinctions between public/private and exterior/interior. Ultimately, the paper aims to show how Moriyama House is able to act as active component of the city fabric where it is inserted, while raising some crucial questions about home-city relations in the framework of contemporary culture.

En 2002, Ryue Nishizawa recibió el encargo para construir una casa en el barrio especial de Ōta, un poblado tradicional de estructura fragmentada y heterogénea que había sido absorbido por el crecimiento de Tokio. El proyecto construido, basado en la atomización del programa mediante una serie de cajas exentas y jardines entrelazados, queda estrechamente vinculado con este contexto físico, no solo en términos formales, sino también respecto a temas socioeconómicos que afectan a la ciudad y a sus habitantes a largo, medio y corto plazo. La atención prestada al equilibrio entre vacío y lleno invita, a su vez, a reconsiderar la idea del límite y pone en cuestión distinciones convencionales entre público/privado y exterior/interior. En última instancia, el artículo trata de mostrar cómo la Casa Moriyama actúa como componente activo del tejido urbano donde se inserta, además de trazar una serie de cuestiones clave en torno a la relación entre vivienda y ciudad en el marco de la cultura contemporánea.
